Pro-tein... pros and cons of a high protein diet.
Protein is an important part of a healthy diet. Proteins are made up of chemicals called amino acids. Essential amino acids are the ones that your body cannot make and therefore can only come from food that we eat. Your body uses these amino acids to build and repair muscle and to make hormones and enzymes. But is it always beneficial to have a high protein diet? Let's look at some pros and cons of having high protein content in your diet.
How Much Protein?
In a balanced diet, women normally need at least 50g of protein a day and men about 60g per day. With a high-protein diet, it can be much more than that. This extra protein can come from beans, meat, nuts, grains, eggs, seafood, cheese or vegetarian sources like soy.
When training for a sporting event or if you are trying to gain muscle mass in combination with regular gym workouts, it is recommended to have 1.2g-1.7g of protein per kg of body weight every day.
Advantages of a High Protein diet
In a high protein diet, you lower your carbohydrate intake. This along with losing water weight, tricks your body into using fat as your primary energy source. Therefore, people who want to lose body fat can do so effectively using a high protein diet.
For athletes, or people who want to gain muscle mass, consuming high amounts of protein can help build and repair muscle quicker. In these cases, protein supplements like protein shakes and protein bars are used to help reach those high amounts of protein.
The best sources of protein are lean meats and fish, although you can also get adequate protein from vegan sources. Examples of vegan food with high protein contents are: Quinoa, tofu, nuts & seeds, buckwheat, oats and various vegetables.
Disadvantages of a High Protein diet
With all things there are also some downsides to this type of diet you need to consider. Some protein sources also have high fat contents. This can in some cases cause a rise in cholesterol levels, which in turn can increase the risk of heart disease.
Also, if you have any kidney problems, having increased amounts of protein in your diet can put added strain on your kidneys and worsen kidney function. Therefore, high protein diets are not recommended in these cases.
